We think everyone knows that the purchase of decking through holiday parks is one of the most significant ‘rip offs’ across UK Holiday Parks.
They insist on owners buying decking through the park using their ‘approved suppliers’ and refuse permission for you to seek quotes or have your own suppliers carry out the work. Often they cite reasons such as ‘maintaining the aesthetic standard of the park’, when what they really mean is we want a substantial cut of the money for free..
This anti competitive practice often results in caravan owners paying 100% more than they would have had to had they had access to a free market. It is our position that these practices breach regulations and as such companies that carry them out should be prosecuted and caravan owners should be reimbursed the thousands that they have overpaid.
Consumer protection regulations provide for redress in circumstances where consumers have been misled when purchasing goods, and, just as with the PPI scandal, you should be entitled to a refund of the amount you have paid over what the market rate would have been.
We are asking all our group members to go through their Licence Agreements, Park Rules, Correspondence, Emails, letters, brochures, etc, to find anything that the parks have provided which tells you that you have to use their ‘approved’ (or similar) suppliers. Do you have any correspondence from parks where they refuse permission to use your own supplier? Do you have an invoice for your decking? Do you have a pitch improvement policy?
We want to hear from you, what park are/were you on, what park company, what decking supply company? What size was the decking? What price did you pay? Did you pay the park or the supplier? Did the park do anything or simply place the order? We want you to email any information you have which shows they have restricted your access to the shop around by insisting you buy through them or their preferred supplier.
